North Hollywood – One year ago, the intersection of Ben Avenue and Victory Boulevard in North Hollywood experienced severe flooding. Water actually covered the entire floor of the popular Lilit Bakery & Cafe, which was forced to close for several days.
This week, Councilmember Krekorian presided over a groundbreaking ceremony for a storm water infrastructure project that will alleviate flooding at that intersection and the surrounding community. Councilmember Krekorian secured funding for the project, which covers an 83-acre drainage area and is paid for in part with money from Measure O. The measure, approved in 2004, provides funds to prevent and remove pollutants from waterways and oceans.
Completion is expected this coming December.
The project will include catch basins along the gutter to capture storm water runoff, as much as 80 acre feet per year. Assuming daily consumption of 100 gallons per person, that amount will provide potable water to approximately 714 households per year.
In this way, the project represents another contribution from Councilmember Krekorian to the city’s effort to achieve 70% locally-sourced water by 2035.
