In 2019, the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council installed newly elected Board Members who have been working alongside experienced members to represent our community at City Hall by weighing in on City Council actions and proposed land use changes. We have also supported North Hollywood by sponsoring community events, where we can greet people and let them know how they can get involved.
One of our greatest opportunities as a Council is to consider matters before City Council, hear from our stakeholders and represent them. We voted to support several important Council Files this year including:
- Vacancy Tax: 19-0623
- Fair Work Week: 19-0229
- Medicare for All: 19-0002-S157
Land use always draws a lot of interest in our ever-evolving neighborhood. Among other items, we considered and voted to support a mixed-use development at 7940 Lankershim Blvd for 432 apartments with 22,000 square feet of ground floor retail in a seven story building. We heard and supported a request for a beer and wine license at Cali Fresh Mexican Grill at 8021 Lankershim Blvd, and we also encouraged stakeholders to participate in the City’s Community Plan Update process which will shape our neighborhood for the next generation.
Our biggest project in 2019 was to support the restoration of the Lars Hawkes sculpture commemorating the 1984 Olympics. We contributed $8,000 to fund the restoration which began in December with the removal of the sculpture from the 170 cloverleaf at Sherman Way. We will be excited to see this whimsical installation returned in early 2020!
NHNENC supported educational, service-focused and fun events to bring the community together including:
- Financial aid workshop
- NoHo Summer Nights Concert Series
- Community Clean Up
- Fall Fridays at Valley Plaza refreshments
- Special Needs Expo
- Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair
- Current:LA art installation on recycling
- Sun Valley Magnet School Leadership Program Training
- Strathern Elementary Kindergarten Field Trip to Underwood Family Farms
Our 2020 Vision includes you! We have a number of seats open on the Board and we invite you to join us by sending an email with your interest to Board@NHNENC.org and coming to our meeting on January 8. This year we will continue to carefully evaluate and make a difference in land use, beautification and community needs for North Hollywood and you can too!
