June 27, 2024 we celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Fair Ave. Elementary Mural. The painting was done by MURALISM, which emphasizes inclusion by employing individuals with social, physical and/or mental challenges as artists. “By creating art for the community by the community.” These projects not only beautify our surroundings, but each mural expresses the culture and uniqueness of the community itself. Below we share the NHNENC President’s comments at the event:
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and members of our community,
Thank you all for being here today to celebrate the unveiling of this magnificent mural at Fair Avenue Elementary. It is an honor to stand before you as the President of the North Hollywood Northeast Neighborhood Council, representing a community that values collaboration, creativity, and the power of the arts.
This project has been a labor of love, a true testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared vision. Our journey began with an idea—to transform a blank wall into a vibrant canvas that reflects the spirit and diversity of our neighborhood. Today, we see that idea beautifully realized in this mural, a testament to the talent and dedication of everyone involved.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Neighborhood Council Vice President, Jennifer Clark, and our Council District 2 Field Deputy, Arus Grigoryan. Jennifer and Arus, your unwavering commitment, your ability to overcome obstacles, and your leadership in fostering collaboration have been the backbone of this project. Without your hard work and determination, we would not be standing here today.
We are also deeply grateful to the City Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles County Arts and Culture, and the wonderful organization, Muralism, for their invaluable support. Your partnership has been instrumental in bringing this mural to life, and we appreciate your dedication to promoting the arts in our community.
A special thank you goes out to the students, parents, and neighbors who participated in Fair Avenue Elementary’s painting day workshops. Your creativity, enthusiasm, and individual contributions have added a unique touch and spark to this mural. This is not just a piece of art; it is a reflection of our community’s heart and soul, and each of you played a crucial role in its creation.
We must also acknowledge the incredible support of the Fair Avenue Elementary school administrators. Your cooperation and encouragement have been vital in making this project a success. Thank you for opening your doors to this initiative and for believing in the power of art to enrich the lives of your students and the broader community.
As we stand before this mural, let us reflect on the importance of the arts in education and society. The arts inspire creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression. They bridge cultural divides, foster understanding, and create a sense of belonging. For our young students, engaging in artistic endeavors like this mural project is not only a source of joy but also a vital part of their development. It helps them to see the world in new ways, to dream big, and to believe in their ability to shape the future.
In a society that often prioritizes the tangible and the quantifiable, the arts remind us of the intrinsic value of beauty, imagination, and human connection. They enrich our lives, enhance our communities, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
Today, as we cut the ribbon and unveil this mural, we celebrate more than just an artwork. We celebrate the spirit of collaboration, the power of community, and the transformative impact of the arts. Let this mural stand as a symbol of what we can achieve together and a reminder of the boundless potential within each of us.
Thank you all for your contributions, your support, and your presence here today. Let’s continue to nurture the arts, foster creativity, and build a community that we can all be proud of.
Thank you.
