SUMMARY:Homeless Count
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have opinions about the crisis of homelessness in our cities.  Next week you’ll have an opportunity to do something about it. \nThousands of volunteers will spread out across the 4\,000 square miles of Los Angeles County to conduct the 2024 Homeless Count. Traveling in small groups\, volunteers will tally the number of unsheltered individuals\, tents\, vehicles\, and make-shift shelters they see in their assigned census tract. \nGovernment agencies\, including the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA)\, use the data collected during the Homeless Count to develop strategies to address homelessness and determine where funding and resources will do the most good.  As L.A. City Council President Paul Krekorian has said\, “You can’t fix what you don’t measure.” \nThe 2024 Count will begin on Tuesday\, January 23\, in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. Volunteers in East and West Los Angeles will count on Wednesday\, January 24. Finally\, the Count will wrap up Thursday\, January 25\, in the Antelope Valley\, Metro\, and South Los Angeles.    \nYou can volunteer for the Homeless Count for lower North Hollywood at https://www.theycountwillyou.org/lower_north_hollywood and for upper North Hollywood at: https://www.theycountwillyou.org/upper_north_hollywood \nPrior to the count please register with the link as soon as you can. DESCRIPTION:The Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE) is proud to introduce the EmpowerLA Youth Conference\, inviting youth from each region throughout the Los Angeles City to participate in a one-day event with various workshops and presentations. The 2024 EmpowerLA Youth Conference will take place on Saturday January 27\, 2024 from 9am-4pm. \nTopics include history and purpose of the Neighborhood Council system\, Brown Act and Robert’s Rules of Order\, as well as Neighborhood Council 101s. The program will also include speeches by city officials or elected officials\, perhaps the Mayor. The program is executed in partnership with Departments such as Recreation & Parks and Sanitation. At the conclusion of the conference\, attendees will receive resources\, including a headshot photo\, to encourage their personal civic engagement and leadership in the community. \nApply by December 18\, 2023
