City Considers Who Owns the Sidewalks
In many cities, homeowners or neighborhood associations are responsible for sidewalk maintenance. But, since 1974, Los Angeles has kept this responsibility for themselves. In difficult budget times, city leaders are considering changing this and making all of us responsible for the sidewalks again. Right now, there are over 100 miles of sidewalks in the city that need to be fixed, and the city can't keep up. This is a big issue that could mean thousands of dollars in new costs for homeowners. Right now, some City Council Committees have voted against assigning the responsibility to homeowners, but the fight isn't over yet. The Council may drop the idea someday, but for now, stay informed. We'll post updates on developments here. You can also see http://www.laneighbors.org/ for information about the issue, and other stories in the community.
